James Yates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Yates, R.R.2, Lowell, died Saturday of bulbar poliomyelitis in Gary Methodist Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital Friday.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Weaver Funeral Home, Lowell. Surviving besides his parents is a sister, Judith Ann, 5.
A popular Lowell high school sophomore, "Jim" became ill and was rushed to Gary Methodist hospital Friday. He was placed under special care, but failed to respond to treatment for the dread bulbar type of infantile paralysis. He is Lake County's first polio fatality of the year.
James was born in Chicago May 15, 1939, and with his parents and sister Judith Ann, who is five years old, moved to Lake Dalecarlia about two years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Yates are not new comers to this community; however, Glenn and Mrs. Yates, the former Isabel Blair, are both graduates of Lowell high school. Glenn's father, Ed, now deceased, was for many years a successful and esteemed Lowell business man. He operated a furniture store and later operated Lowell's Ritz Theatre, now Esser's Home Furnishings.
Mrs. Yates' father, John Blair, also deceased, was a progressive farmer in the community now known as Lake Dalecarlia. Mrs. Blair resides in a cottage next to the home of her daughter and family at Lake Dalecarlia. Mrs. Ed Yates makes her home with her daughter at Sarasota, Fla.
Glenn, a Pullman conductor on the Rock Island railroad was in California when he received the news that his son had been stricken by polio. He flew to Chicago immediately, arriving in Gary a short time after his son died. Mrs. Yates is a teacher at Lowell grade school.
Jim will be sorely missed by his classmates at Lowell high school, where he was keenly interested in school activities, especially basketball. Jim's future plans included obtaining a degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University.
Rev. O.R. Foster, pastor of the Lake Dale Community church, officiated at memorial services held Monday, August 2, at 2 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home. Interment was in Lowell cemetery.
Surviving besides his parents are a sister, Judith Ann, 5, and two grandmothers, Mrs. Alice Yates, now living in Florida, and Mrs. Grace Blair of Lake Dale Carlia.
