The Alyea Hotel

This photo from a circa 1912 postcard, taken from the top of a 100-foot high stand pipe looking northwest from the Lowell town square, shows the Hotel Alyea, that once stood on the southeast corner of Jefferson and Mill Streets, in the foreground. The three-story brick gristmill built in the 1860's south of the creek bridge on Main Street, is seen in the upper left hand corner. One of the buildings close to the upper right of the hotel could be Jonah Thorn's hotel, which was located across Main Street from the Melvin A. Halsted house.

This photo was included in the July 29, 2003, "Pioneer History" column on Lowell hotels by Town Historian Richard Schmal.
