The following April 19, 1995, Lowell Tribune obituary was found in the Lowell Public Library local history clippings file (LH--Vital Statistics, vol. 5, page 57):
Roy W. Surprise, age 79, a lifelong resident of Cedar Lake, passed away Mon., Apr. 10, 1995, at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Dyer. Survivors include: his wife, Ruth Surprise; two daughters, Beverly Surprise and Nancy (Raymond) Webb, both of Schererville; one son, Richard (Evelyn) Surprise of Cedar Lake; one sister, Lillian Pandolfi of Milwaukee, Wis.; one brother, Julius (Dorothy) Surprise of Lowell; and eight grandchildren: Brian, Nathan, Timothy, William, Matthew, Richard, Jr. and Evelyn Surprise of Cedar Lake, and Kyla Webb of Schererville. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Apr. 13 from the Burdan Funeral Home, Cedar Lake, with Msgr. William Martin, pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Cedar Lake, officiating. Burial followed at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. Visitation was held from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Apr. 12 at the funeral home. Roy Surprise owned Surprise Hardware in Cedar Lake for many years and was a parishoner at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and a member of the Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce. A military veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of AMVETS Post No. 15 in Cedar Lake.
