The mother, Nancy, having passed away when Mary was only four years of age, it necessitated the making of a home elsewhere, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Oliver, the grand-parents, made such a home, so we can say that the grand-parents reared this good woman.
On April 14, 1863, Mary K. Oliver was united in marriage to Thomas Jefferson Strickland. Prior to the marriage the grand-father passed away and the grand-mother resided at Farmdale, Ill., and it was in her home that the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Strickland was solemnized. To this happy union six children were born, all of whom survive the mother's going. The companion and father passed away over fourteen years ago and her brother and sister have also preceded her going.
In December 1920 Mrs. Strickland was initiated into the Eastern Star at Lowell, Indiana, and at the time her grand son, Harold, was the youngest Patron of the Order of Eastern Star of Indiana, and he gave her the degree.
Mrs. Strickland passed away on April 9, 1928, after a short illness, but age was on her track, as she was 84 years, 4 months and 23 days of age.
She leaves to mourn her going, four sons and two daughters, namely T.H. Strickland, LaCenter, Kentucky; Frank W., of Lowell, Indiana; W.I., of Hebron, Ind.; P.J., of California; Mrs. Martha A. Bose, of Idaville, Ind.; Mrs. Mary R. Burroughs, of Peoria, Ill.; 23 grand-children; 17 great-grand-children; besides these there are many other relatives and friends who will miss her.
She has been a life long member of the United Brethren church and at the time of her death held membership in the United Brethren church at Lexington, Ill.; yea, even in her childhood she was learned to know her Lord. A gracious friend, a wonderful neighbor, and an honored mother goes from our midst. No, we cannot forget her.
Funeral services, in charge of Rev. V.V. Hackley, pastor of the M.E. church, were held at the home in Lowell yesterday morning at 8, after which the remains were taken to Lexington, Ill., her old home, for interment. Undertakers Sheets and Son had charge of the burial service.
