A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Sylvanus Sullivan Spalding died at 3 o'clock Friday morning, Jan 6, 1901, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Huldah Sutton, in the township of Dundee. He was the second child of Heman and Mary Spalding. He was born in Westmoreland Township, Oneida County, N.Y., Dec. 28, 1811. He emigrated to Dundee Mich., in the spring of 1831, as a pioneer farmer. On Nov. 1, 1835, he was married to Emeline Beech. She died Jan. 25, 1849, in Dundee. Three sons and three daughters were the fruits of this marriage. He remarried in Nov. 1849. His second wife's name was Hannah Wright -- a widow. She died in Dundee, May 20, 1872. The fruit of this marriage was one child, a daughter. He leaves one son and three daughters, also four brothers and two sisters, all living in Dundee except two of his daughters and his two sisters. He was a child, a brother, a man, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather. Few have been more.
