Mrs. Shortridge, whose maiden name was Marietta Elizabeth Purdy, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Purdy, who were pioneers of this section, and was born near Lowell, March 15, 1852. In 1873 she was united in marriage to Irenus Shortridge, to whom were born four children, two of whom have passed on, and surviving her are one son, Ernest L. Shortridge, of Crown Point, and one daughter, Mrs. Ralph Pierce, of Hammond. There are two grandchildren, Miss Ruth Shortridge and William E. Pierce.
Since the death of her husband several years ago she has made her home with her daughter. She united with the Christian church more than 60 years ago and was one of the two surviving charter members of the First Christian church at Hammond where she has resided since December 1892.
Mrs. Shortridge had many friends here at her old home and made annual visits here, as long as her health would permit, where she was the guest of her niece, Mrs. Bessie Plamondon, and nephew Will Purdy. She was the last surviving member of the William E. Purdy family.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Christian church in Hammond. The services were conducted by Rev. Walter E. Harman, the pastor. The remains were brought to Lowell and interment was made in the family lot in the Lowell cemetery.
