Honored for Heroism

The Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star Medal were awarded to Army Lieutenant Colonel Charles Morrow Jr., whose parents live in Cedar Lake, Ind., in ceremonies at his base, Dec. 20. It was the colonel's fourth award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Colonel Morrow earned this award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in combat, Nov. 16-19 and the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding achievement during the period July 28 to Nov. 22.

For his actions earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, he was an airborne controller for a large scale combat helicopter operation that involved the use of four assault helicopter companies and major portions of an assault support helicopter company.

Colonel Morrow directed these aviation units in landing two infantry battalions and three artillery batteries in areas that were often under direct enemy fire. During the extraction phase of the operation, his ability to analyze the situation permitted the efficient removal of two infantry battalions, two artillery batteries and the repositioning of a third battery.

Colonel Morrow earned the Bronze Star Medal while serving as commanding officer, 9th Aviation Battalion, participating in Operations Coronado II, IV, Santa Fe I and II and Kien Gang. He was responsible for planning the air assault portions and all subsequent Army aviation support for these major operations.

Colonel Morrow, whose wife, Joan, lives at 1823 N. Harrison St., Arlington, Va., is assigned as assistant chief of staff for air operations and training in Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam.
