Resting in death, we hope, with God: Christian, son of Conrad and Henrietta Guergens, at the age of 19 years, 6 months and 3 days. In October 1861 he volunteered to join the 9th Illinois Cavalry regiment. He joined, to fight for the freedom of this land. He had 20 action engagements completed, and we draw from this he was an experienced champion and became lucky from his experiences.
While in his last campaign under General Sherman by Okolona and Pontotoc, Mississippi, the 25th of February 1864, at about 10 O Clock in the morning, he was stopped by the enemy's fire, he was struck by two fiendish rifle or pistol balls, one through the head and one through the chest, whereupon he immediately expired.
