ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Jacob Hayden, son of Nehemiah and Harriet (Kitchell) Hayden, was born in Knox County, Ohio, March 11, 1831 and died at his home in Lowell, Ind. Dec.27, 1908, at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 16 days. At the age of 7 years he came with his parents to Lake County, Ind., and settled in West Creek Township on the farm where he spent almost his entire life. He was a member of one of our earliest and most highly respected pioneer families and contributed his full share of hard work and privation in the settlement of this part of Lake County. He was strictly honest in all his dealings with his fellowman, a good citizen and a kind and loving husband and father and will be sincerely mourned by many outside his immediate family. A good citizen, honest and industrious man and a good neighbor and friend has gone from among us. December 10, 1854, he was united in marriage with Sarah M. Knisely. To this union nine children was born; two of which preceded him to the Spirit World. January 22, 1906 he was called upon to part with his wife in death. His funeral, which was very largely attended, occurred from the West Creek Church Wednesday, December 30 at 11 a.m. Rev. T.F. Drake, pastor of the M.E. church here, preached the funeral discourse. Funeral Director John Castle had charge of the burial services. The following nephews acted as pall bearers: Hermie Hayden, Earl Hayden, Jodie Hayden, Grant Hayden, Jesse Hayden and Thos. Hayden. Interment beside his wife in the cemetery adjoining the church. He leaves to mourn him three sons -- Elmer, Leroy and Fred, of Lowell; four daughters -- Mrs. Daniel Smith, Sherburnville; Mrs. J.W. Brannon, Billings, Montana; Mrs. Charles Hayhurst, Lamar, Colorado, and Mrs. Addison Clark, Lowell, twenty-eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two brothers -- Cyrus and William, of Lowell, one sister -- Mrs. Jackson Smith, of Lowell, and numerous other relatives to whom we extend sincere sympathy in their sad hour of sorrow and bereavement.
