60th class reunion, 2009

Roland J. Hoffman, Walter H. Crouch and Richard S. Walden, who reported on Tuesday of last week for induction in the armed forces, were assigned to serve with the Marine Corps. 16 were inducted into the army -- Ronald A. Gross, Alfred E. Smith, Brice A. Weiler, Charles G. Steffel, Everett L. Molden, Charles R. Krieter, John A. Clemens, Raymond F. Crilley, Joseph G. Schelfo, Richard F. Van Doring, Lester L. Wien, William J. Johnson, James L. Scott, Robert M. Kedzo, Herbert R.E. Gerst and Donald J. Miller.

Herbert Gerst, son of Mrs. D.A. Hadders, who was inducted into the army on January 8th, sends the following address to the Tribune and home friends: Pvt. Herbert R. Gerst, US55232761, Co. "G" 61st Inf. Regt., Fort Jackson, S.C. Herbert graduated from Lowell high school with the class of '49.

Pfc. Herbert Gerst arrived home last Wednesday from Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and is enjoying a 15-day furlough at home. Herbert will report to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, from where he expects to be sent to Europe.

Herbert Gerst Promoted to Colonel

With the 4th Infantry Division in Germany -- Herbert E. Gerst of route 2, Lowell, was recently promoted to corporal while serving with the 4th Infantry Division in Germany.

Now stationed in the southern part of the country, the 4th Division is receiving intensive field training as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Army in Europe.

Cpl. Gerst is serving with the division's Reconnaissance Company as a rifleman.

Before entering the Army he was employed by the Inland Steel Co.
