Sarah Lefler Edmonds (1817-1902)
(Mrs. Melvin E. Edmonds)
The following unidentified newspaper article appeared in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Sarah Lefler was born near Oakland, Upper Canada, March 26, 1817, and died at the home of her son Nelson Edmonds, in Lowell, Indiana, April 10, 1902, aged 85 years and 14 days.
She was united in marriage with Melvin Edmonds November 11, 1834, who died in September 1876. To this union six children were born, all of which are still living. She also leaves eighteen grand-children, twenty great-grand-children and one great-great-grand-child.
She moved with her husband to West Creek, Indiana, about 60 years ago, and has since resided in this vicinity. Coming to this country in an early day she endured all the hardships of a pioneer life.
She was a kind and indulgent mother, and was best known and loved in her own home, being a quiet, unassuming woman, always solicitous for the welfare of her children.
Her funeral occurred from her late home at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12th, Rev. John Bruce officiating. Interment beside her husband in West Creek cemetery. The TRIBUNE extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family in their dark hour of sorrow.
* NOTE -- Although this article lists the death year of Melvin Edmonds as 1876, another article has it as 1875.
