The following undated newspaper clipping was hand-identified as having come from the Spalding scrapbook. It was found in the Lowell Public Library's clipping files (LH-Vital Statistics, Vol. 4, page 71):
Gone to his home June 8th, '95, Willie, son of Erwin and Mary Dickey, aged 15 years, 9 months, and 12 days. He was an industrious and obedient son, loved by those who knew him best. He leaves father and mother, brother and sister and many near and dear friends to mourn his early departure. Funeral services were held at the Christian church on June 10th, conducted by Rev. Morgan who spoke kind and consoling words to a large and sympathizing audience.
A note of sadness fills the air
Our hearts with grief are torn;
A loved one from our side is gone,
And we in sorrow mourn.
